'To escape a global extinction event Earth’s populations are induced into comas, their bodies housed in vast concrete banks known as Cathedrals. It makes excellent accompaniment for reading fictional dystopian literature, social media feeds and headlines alike. Inspired by the prescient works of J G Ballard, David Cronenberg and Mark Fisher, Interzone transcribes the unheeded warnings and pre-occupations of yester-decades into an audio document, a lexicon to decode a (post-)pandemic-era society. Not yet anyway.Interzone is a neo-concrète exploration of the intensive zones beyond standard perceptual audio thresholds: the inner spaces of sound brimming with texture and microtonal details hitherto unheard, exploring time, spatial relationships of sound, lost futures, and the liminal intersection of technology and ritual. Still, I’ve listened to this a lot, kinda wrestled with it – there’s something there.

I guess I’ll tune in again if there’s another album – but there’s not enough going on here despite any (vague) promise. Watery, washed out, dribbling out into a thin trace of sound. But there’s no vitality here, no energy – and so the languidness weighs it down, and it all floats into the same space. I like to think I’m hearing more in it than in so many of the other grey-spaces/water-colour mixtures as day-dreamed up by the bedsit pop crowd. I want to like this – and I’m not quite sure why.

Unfortunately it’s more a case, at this stage, of being one to watch than one-to-listen-to. BANKS – Jillian Rose Banks – is the one-to-watch behind Goddess. Another one-word female artist offering a woozy, wounded take on R’n’B-as- Stuff-White-People-Like.
